Roll Forming is a continuous process in which flat metal is formed into a profile by passing through successive passes of forming rolls.
At each pass, the rolls bend the metal more until the final shape or profile is attained. Sometimes the process is referred to as "cold roll forming" since the material is not heated.
Most roll formers are coil fed but pre-cut strips can also be used. An accumulator can be installed before the rolling mill to hold sufficient material to keep the mill running while a new coil is put in-line and joined to the strip.
The end product is typically cut off "on-the-fly" in a die mounted on a movable carriage in a press in-line.
| Punching can be done in-line, either to the flat stock before forming or to the profile after forming and before cut-off.
